Changing the lives of adults with learning disabilities forever

It is with a heavy heart that The Helping Hands Group have decided to temporarily close our centres with immediate effect,  for the benefit of the Health and Safety of our individuals and staff.

The Government yesterday (16/03/20) have encouraged those who are vulnerable and/or have underlying health issues to self isolate for 12 weeks, due to the ever growing worry of COVID-19 better known as the Coronavirus.

As the days have progressed more and more staff have come down with symptoms which has lead to them going into self quarantine, this alone has created an unsafe environment for the individuals we assist, and also that for the staff that remained.

The Government have now published the following explanation on what they deem as “vulnerable” that list is as follows…

  • Medical conditions where a flu jab is normally advised.
  • Chronic (long-term) respiratory diseases, such as asthma (that requires an inhaled or tablet steroid treatment, or has led to hospital admission in the past), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema or bronchitis

  • Chronic heart disease, such as heart failure

  • Chronic kidney disease

  • Chronic liver disease, such as hepatitis

  • Chronic neurological conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis (MS), a learning disability or cerebral palsy

  • Diabetes

  • Problems with your spleen – for example, sickle cell disease or if you have had your spleen removed

  • A weakened immune system as the result of conditions such as HIV and AIDS, or medicines such as steroid tablets or chemotherapy

  • Being seriously overweight (a BMI of 40 or above)

With the above in mind we feel the correct thing to do is to follow these guidelines for the benefit of everyone’s well being.

We appreciate that this will have a huge impact on many peoples lives and we have worked incredibly hard to maintain a safe and healthy environment for all, but it now appears that we have come to a crossroad, and ultimately safety MUST come first.

We will continue to update parents/carers on a week to week basis moving forward.

We are in uncertain times but please rest assured that we will continue to do everything we can, in getting through this situation and getting back to doing what we do best, which is changing the lives of adults with learning disabilities, forever.

Please stay safe and continue to follow the government guidelines moving forward.
